Who wears short shorts? Looks like it’s that time of year again… The sun is shining, the weather is getting warmer and our winter jackets are being replaced by tank tops, bathing suits, shorts and sundresses. Are you ready for the strip down? Well, if you’re not, Juan and Christine from Studio Strength are here to help you prepare!
Everyone looks forward to Memorial day weekend. It’s the start of summer picnics, going to the beach, pool parties and barbecues. What you do not look forward to is the massive panic that sets in when you know you need to lose 15 to 20 pounds from winter hibernation. In another month, it will be bathing suit season!
So what do you do? You start going to the gym? Or maybe not. But most importantly, you know you have to lose weight. So you find a good crash diet that promises you a lose 3, 5 or even 10 pounds a week. Hmmm, maybe I’ll do Atkins? Jenny Craig? Nutrisystem? Maybe I will do a diet shake three times a day. Oh wait! How can I forget about juicing? (And by the way, I do like juicing, I just find it very impractical with the preparation and the amount of money you spend on fruit). Have you ever noticed people who do all these diets will lose weight but they never seem to keep it off? They just completely burn out.
Let me stop right now and tell you that there is no miracle diet. I have been in the fitness business for 25 years and have personally seen myself and my clients yo-yo diet over and over again. You can do any diet that will help you lose weight but I will guarantee you one thing- if you lose 3, 5 or even 10 pounds a week you will put it on faster than it took you to lose it when you stop the diet.
When you lose weight this rapidly you will slow down your metabolism because you are burning down lean muscle mass. I understand sometimes you don’t care-you just want to see the numbers on the scale come down. But please don’t forget that your metabolism is fueled by the lean muscle mass on your body. The way to preserve your lean muscle mass is by practicing healthy eating HABITS that include:
1) Proper caloric consumption
2) Hydrating
3) Eating lean proteins, fruits and vegetables
4) Getting on a proper exercise routine
Did you notice the highlighted word: HABITS? When, where, how much and what you are doing when you are eating are also habits that you need to concern yourself with to prevent yourself from yo-yo dieting.
Please take this information and start changing your habits before your diets. You’re guaranteed to have success when you change the bad habits.

Inside Garden City’s Motherload Mother’s Day raffle drawing will be TONIGHT (read: there’s still time to enter!) Let’s extend the Mother’s Day celebration just a bit longer. Why should all of the excitement take place on just one day? Isn’t it fun to have one more surprise to look forward to… for one lucky winner??
Here’s another sneak peek into what’s been added to the Gift Basket Like No {M}Other and how the winner might spend her day enjoying her spoils…
She’ll start off with a morning trip to Studio Strength private fitness studio on Franklin Ave where she’ll have a consultation and private training session with trainer Juan Mayoral or Christine Inguanta. After a great workout, she’ll head to Food For Thought for a complimentary smoothie or delectable {healthy} treat. Next on the list: Nail Boutique on Franklin Ave to get her nails in shape for tonight.
All of this preparation will likely leave her hungry and it’s just about lunchtime anyway, so she’ll stop in at Avellino’s on Nassau Blvd for a delicious bite (that hopefully her trainers at Studio Strength won’t disapprove of too much!) When she steps out of Avellino’s into the bright sunshine, she’ll decide that she wants to bring home a bit of spring so she’ll swing by to see Ed at Feldis Florists for a beautiful bouquet!
Since she’s back on Seventh St., she’ll pop into Envie and spend her gift card by picking out something to wear tonight. Next she’ll hit Madsion’s Niche for some accessories- perhaps earrings or a necklace?

Before she leaves Seventh St., she’ll stop in and see Orthodontist Dr. Emma for a consult on that one tooth that’s always bugged her when she smiles. She’ll make an appointment for next month to use Dr. Emma’s $500 gift certificate on Invisalign.
Now it’s time to head home and get ready. As she relaxes for a moment and sips a cup of her new DAVIDsTEA, she feels grateful for the fabulous local businesses in Garden City that give back to their community and make the annual Motherload gift basket possible!
As she gets dressed to head out for a delectable meal at Revel,
where she’ll be meeting her companion, she looks in the mirror at her dazzling self. She reminds herself not to order red wine with dinner since she just had her teeth whitened yesterday courtesy of Dr. Lizzio at Long Island Family Dental on Stewart Ave. Then she reminds herself to go ahead and order dessert tonight- she has another training session at Studio Strength tomorrow!
Here’s to you!
~Drawing tonight~ Make sure you’re entered~ Stay tuned~
If you haven’t entered, please do by liking Inside Garden City’s Facebook page and any post that mentions the Motherload raffle!

If you haven’t gotten a Mother’s Day gift yet for your mother, wife or sister {or yourself}, don’t despair- Feldis Florist on Seventh St. has got you covered!
I stopped in there this afternoon to see what they had going on for the big day and the place was pumpin’. Ed and crew were hard at work with barely a minute to chat. Orders were coming in by phone and by foot. Gorgeous bouquets and gifts were everywhere. Here’s a glimpse:
They have bouquets in all price ranges, from the min to the max. And pretty creative too- have you ever seen purple calla lilies before? Calla lilies are one of my absolute fave flowers but in deep purple they’re going to a whole new level that I just love.

Although, you have given up sushi, caffeine and the occasional glass of wine, daily routines don’t come to a halt for 9 months. Daily brushing, flossing and regular dental visits are still very important. Questions around proper care for your teeth and gums during this critical time are common. Here are some frequently asked questions about taking care of your teeth during pregnancy for all of those mothers- to-be out there.
What is the best thing I can do to avoid a problem with my teeth during pregnancy?
The old wives’ tale, “A tooth lost for every child”, may seem extreme, but it does have some validity. If you are planning to become pregnant, make sure you visit your dentist for an examination and have your teeth cleaned. Preventing potential dental problems from occurring during pregnancy is the best thing you can do. Take care of any decayed or cracked teeth and those impacted wisdom teeth you have been ignoring… well, this is the time to make sure everything is looking good!
Is it normal for my gums to bleed?
Hormonal changes during pregnancy affect your teeth and gums just as they do other tissues in your body. Bleeding gums increase beginning in the second or third month. This becomes more severe through the eighth month and then begins to diminish in the ninth month. This condition, called “pregnancy gingivitis,” is caused by an increased progesterone secretion which causes gum tissue to increasingly swell, bleed and redden in response to a very small amount of plaque. If your gums are healthy before pregnancy, you are less likely to have this problem. If you see some “pink in the sink” when you rinse the let the dentist know so that they can determine the best treatment.
Can I have my teeth cleaned while I am pregnant?
There is no risk of having routine dental care while you are pregnant. It is ideal to have your teeth cleaned every 6 months, or more frequently if you have a history of periodontal disease or gingivitis.
What if I get a toothache?
If you are having pain, it needs to be treated no matter what stage of pregnancy you are in. The risk of infection from an untreated dental problem is far worse for you and your baby, than the procedure itself. X-rays may be important to have in order to diagnose the problem. Since most dentists are using digital x-rays, they are safe especially when used with an abdominal shield and thyroid collar for added protection. Certain local anesthetics are safe to use in order keep you comfortable during your care. Also, certain types of antibiotics can be prescribed that will not be harmful to your baby.
Are there any dental procedures I should avoid?
Non-emergency procedures can be performed, but the best time is from the fourth through sixth month. Elective and cosmetic procedures should be postponed until after the baby is born.
Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the moms!
