Weekend Events Guide June 13th Edition

The weekend is finally here! With some beautiful weather forecasted and Father’s Day on Sunday, make sure you get out and enjoy it. Here’s what’s going on in and around Garden City:

What we’ve all been waiting for… Opening Day of the GC Pool is Sat., June 14th. 12noon – 8pm.

Ok, so the Mattituck Lions Strawberry Festival doesn’t exactly take place “in or around” Garden City, but I thought it deserved an honorable mention since their strawberry shortcake is ammaaaazing. This indulgence alone is reason enough to brave the traffic and head east. The festival takes place on Fri, Sat and Sun. Games, crafts, rides, food, live music, fab strawberry shortcake (did I mention that already?) and more!

The Eisenhower Park Family Festival takes place on Sat and Sun 12-6pm, Field 2. Free admission.

BK Sweeney’s Uptown Grille on Franklin Ave is having a lobster bake this (and every) Friday night all summer. $31.95 for a 2 lb lobster dinner.

Capo Ristorante on Covert Ave is offering 10% off your lunch/dinner tab or your catering order on Father’s Day by mentioning Inside Garden City. Take a break from the bbq this Father’s Day and try Capo.

Revel on Franklin Ave is having a special Father’s Day menu on Sunday. $39.95 for a 3 course prix fixe. Seatings throughout the day.

The 17th Annual Jay Gallagher Memorial Tournament takes place at St Paul’s on June 14th-15th. This foundation encourages cancer awareness and focuses on improving the lives of those living with cancer.

If you’re looking for some live music on Sat night, His Boy Elroy will be performing at Leo’s at 9:30pm.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City will be hosting Eternal Con- a Pop Culture Expo. Come and get your fill of comic books, sci-fi, collectibles, gaming, costumes, raffles, movie screenings and more. Sat 10-7 ($20 adults, $12 children), Sun 10-5 ($20 adults, $6 children). Museum members pay only $15 for adults and $6 for children on both days.

Long Island Children’s Museum has #1 Dad Day on Sunday 2-4pm, free with museum admission. Make a special Father’s Day card with a personalized message.

Sunday is the last day to register your kids for Miss Suzanne’s art camp next week, June 16-19. Only $120 for four days. Your kids will get real art instruction and have tons of fun. Email her for more  information at suzanne_mcandrews@hotmail.com.

Between the Belmont Stakes and the beautiful weather that’s forecasted, there are plenty of options for having fun in and around GC this weekend. Whether you’re into horse racing, flea markets or festivals, you will have a lot to choose from!

Capo Ristorante of Floral Park will have Belmont Drink Specials on Friday and Saturday. Plus, every purchase gets a $1 bet slip for California Chrome! Let them cater your Belmont Race party- just ask for the special Belmont catering package (since all tickets for dining options at Belmont are sold out, having your own party may be the right move).

On Saturday June 7th they’ll have drink specials, along with their usual happy hour, until 7pm. Look for Jim, Revel’s owner, at the Seventh St. Belmont Festival Friday night handing out coupons for free giveaways!

As of Thursday night, the excitement has already begun at the GC Hotel. The Polo Lounge kicked off a special cocktail list (try a Belmont Jewel- yum!) Thursday night that will run through all of Saturday, June 7th. Be sure to stop by after the Belmont Stakes Saturday night. Inside scoop is that the horse owners and jockeys are staying in-house. Mother’s Day at the Track

Gambling, alcohol, cigars, sports- the perfect ingredients for a typical Mother’s Day, right? Or you could look at it this way- an easy way to turn your children onto one of life’s many vices. If that reasoning still doesn’t appeal to you, how about thinking of it this way- you’re teaching your child the finer arts of statistics in a slightly unorthodox way- through horse betting.

All kidding aside, the horses were racing on Mother’s Day at Belmont Park and it was a great, albeit different (for me at least), way to spend Mother’s Day. The typical Mother’s Day brunch at a restaurant didn’t appeal to me this year but Belmont sounded exciting. Families came with packed coolers and picnic baskets. They staked out spots on the grassy grounds, whether at a table or right on the grass with blankets. The picnic grounds were totally alive with a petting zoo, pony rides, bubble stations, face painting, karaoke, a train ride around the park and more. All of this was free with admission btw. There were also concession stands selling hot dogs, burgers, fries, ice cream, snacks, beer & soda.

The races can be viewed from the picnic grounds on large screen tvs placed all around the park (you might think that tvs placed up around the trees sounds a bit strange but surprisingly it works), or you could walk to the track and view them (actual betting makes the race viewing a little more fun in my opinion). Betting can be done inside or at betting windows outside.

There was also Breakfast at Belmont on Mother’s Day from 7-10am. Participants enjoyed breakfast, a tour of Belmont and got to watch Thoroughbreds train prior to the races. Breakfast at Belmont happens most weekends in the spring and summer. Call Belmont or check their website for dates before you go. But this was too early for someone like me who enjoys sleeping in a bit on Mother’s Day. I will be sure to check it out on another weekend though. You can also attend any Sunday “Family Fun Days” at Belmont and don’t forget Father’s Day where the will be activities similar to what went down on Mother’s Day.

Belmont’s summer events page lists other upcoming festivities, like the Wing Festival on May 24th where you’ll get to sample wings from all over Long Island and vote for the best. And of course, the Belmont Stakes on June 7th – which could end up being very exciting this year if California Chrome is able to win the Preakness this weekend.
Stay tuned to find out if we’ll have a shot to see the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years at Belmont!

Win a gift basket like no (M)other!

Inside Garden City presents:

                                                  THE MOTHERLOAD

Who needs a crowded Walmart or shopping mall when you’ve got great shopping right at your doorstep? GC’s many locally owned restaurants, boutiques, delis, cafés, salons, etc. are at the heart of our community. I’m happy to support them in any way I can, in addition to frequenting them often! They’re a crucial component of our local economy as well as a convenient alternative to braving the traffic of Old Country Road.

When we patronize our local businesses, we give money back to our community. A successful local business generates higher revenue and pays higher taxes. This tax revenue helps pay for many of the things we all love about Garden City.

While our local businesses may be the heart of GC, I’m sure many would agree that our mothers are the soul. In honor of Mother’s Day, a number of local businesses have made generous donations to enable Inside Garden City to create a Mother’s Day gift basket like no (m)other. Actually, this gift basket has grown so much in the past few days, that we are now calling it “The Motherload”!

How to enter:
1) Be a mother, have a mother, or know a mother
2) Like Inside Garden City’s Facebook page (if you haven’t already) AND
3) Like or comment on any FB post which mentions “The Motherload” raffle.

Your name will then be entered into a raffle for the Motherload and one lucky winner will be randomly chosen on Mother’s Day night!

Sneak peeks will be given… such as which of our amazing local businesses will be featured in “the Motherload”.

Earth Day- Do Your Part

Earth Day is a great time to think about our planet and what we will be leaving behind for future generations. We can all take steps to improve upon our “green” behavior and encourage others to do the same. There are so many ways to make our world greener and many take very little effort. Here are some easy tips to reduce, reuse, recycle:

1. I like adding the words “refuse” and “rethink” to the green motto mentioned above. One easy thing you can do is refuse plastic shopping bags in the grocery store, or any other store for that matter. Bring your own reusable cloth bags or reuse the plastic ones you have at home. I know I’m not the only one with a plastic bag filled with plastic bags in my cabinet!

2. Try not to throw away the plastic bags that you don’t need. Drop them in a bag recycling bin found at CVS, ShopRite and most other grocery stores. These bins will also usually accept plastic dry cleaning bags, plastic bread bags, etc.

3. While most of us are pretty good at acquiring “stuff”, we are probably not as good at discarding things. There are many options to recycle our no longer needed goods to someone else who could use them. Craigslist has a free section. Freecycle is a great website that makes it easy to turn one man’s trash into another man’s treasure. Donate to a thrift store, Salvation Army or consignment store (if you want to make some cash on your goods).

4. Another option is to donate your goods to a local cause like the annual GC Andy Foundation Yard Sale or the upcoming Benefit Yard Sale this Sat, 4/26, at the Tanners Pond Environmental Center in GC. Call 516-326-1720 for more information about donating.

5. Walk more/drive less: With spring upon us it’s a great time to reduce some of your car trips. Do whatever errands you can by foot to reduce air pollution. Visit Big City Bicycle on Nassau Blvd to give your bike a tune-up or to buy one (better yet- try Craigslist, a yard sale or Freecycle for a used bike). And when it’s time for a new car, think fuel-efficient!

6. Eat local/healthy foods. Patronize local restaurants that support local farmers. I may as well mention the local wineries here too. There are plenty of great wines produced on Long Island’s North Fork that we can be proud of!

7. Use a reusable coffee cup and save the cardboard. Hint: this only works if you actually bring the cup with you to your local coffee shop! Definitely refuse styrofoam cups. Tsk Tsk… Dunkin Donuts.

8. And the easiest one of all that we do we every day… unplug appliances and chargers when not in use. How simple is that?

It’s really not that difficult to go the green way. Visit http://www.earthday.org for more tips and ideas. Happy Earth Day!
