Raising the Party Bar

Moms and Dads are super busy these days and often don’t have the time, talent or desire (I admit to this last one) to plan a proper birthday party for their children. But they still want to give them an awesome party. What’s a parent to do? Well, hold onto your cupcakes and goodie bags because there’s a new player rockin’ the kids party scene in GC.

Ok, so Lil’ Athletes is not really a “new player.” They’re experts at running children’s classes and have been holding birthday parties in Huntington for eight years. But did you know they started hosting parties for ages 2-10 in West Hempstead in November? We were one of the first families to hold a birthday party there.

I was a little nervous since Lil’ Athletes Sports Academy just opened their doors at Island Garden Basketball (former home of the ABA NY Nets and Dr J back when he was dunking red, white and blue basketballs in the 70s), but I was assured that it would run as smooth as silk. And it did. The owner, Brett, and his wife Jennifer ran the show along with a great staff. I requested the party be run like one of their classes- lots of playtime, zero downtime, fun for boys AND girls. I got exactly what I asked for and saw nothing but happy kids laughing, running, playing, jumping, throwing, etc. What kid doesn’t enjoy pelting the coaches with rubber balls?

There were plenty of enthusiastic staff members on hand to help out with activities and serve food/cake. We were never rushed. They were helpful when I wanted to take group photos. I got the feeling that the staff was enjoying the kids and party as well. I know from other children’s parties I’ve been to and even some of my own, that is not always the case. I often see uninterested “I’m too school for cool” young teenage assistants who would rather be anywhere than working a kiddie birthday party.

Another thing that distinguishes Lil’ Athletes is that the owners are very easygoing with how YOU want to run the party. If you want to have face painters, a bounce house, t-shirt airbrushing, characters, tattoo artists, etc…, they will likely say “Bring it.” I don’t know about you, but I love this can-do attitude from people I do business with.

The best part– the kids had a blast. I heard from many of the parents that it was the best party they had been to and their kids were talking about it weeks later. So get your party on at Lil’ Athletes! 516-874-0345.

Holidays Gangnam Style in GC

A fellow GC resident passed on some great inside information last week- the light show in Garden City. I hadn’t heard of this before and certainly never observed when living in the city, so I definitely wanted to check it out. I went that night and it is definitely not to be missed. If you are able to drive by 4 Lincoln Ave before their last night on Jan 4, please do it. These are no amateurs. They’ve been doing this for seven years and their experience shows. It’s simple- drive up, tune your radio to 105.5 and enjoy the show. You will hear traditional holiday tunes as well as more recent hit music, such as Gangnam Style. It’s a pretty great show and I’m planning to stop by again before the 4th.

Here’s a more comprehensive list of their songs:
The Fox – Ylvis
Wake Me Up – Avicii
Gangnam Style – Psy
Party Rock Anthem – LMFAO
Wizards in Winter – Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Christmas Eve Sarajevo – Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Jingle Bells – Barbra Streisand

Carol of the Bells – David Foster
Amazing Grace – Yule
Music Box Dancer – DJ Schwede

HOURS:

Fri and Sat: 5-11 pm
Sun thru Thur 5-10 pm

If you visit their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/lightstoabeat or their website, http://www.lightstoabeat.com, you will politely be advised to keep the neighbors in mind by keeping your music low while in the car. There is also a notification that Lights to a Beat is accepting donations for the Make-A-Wish foundation. There is a Make-A-Wish sign and donation box at the sidewalk. The night I was there, many people were getting out of their cars and donating. That’s the holiday spirit!

For me, this live show was at least as entertaining as the Guinness Book of World Records original Gangnam Style video (1.8 billion YouTube views- Wow!).

I hear this type of experience can be found in other towns across America and it’s one trend of suburban entertainment that I hope continues. It’s not exactly something you would find in a Norman Rockwell painting, but it does put a smile on your face and therefore, in the “Christmas spirit.”

Post-Christmas Week

With Christmas 2014 behind us, I’ve discovered some less obvious holiday things that made me happy during this post-Christmas week. They are:
1. Having a fridge filled with leftovers from Christmas dinner.
2. Eating homemade rum cake for the first time. Yum!
3. Having extra down time to spend with my family & no schedules to follow! #Relaxation
4. Christmas cookies. Need I say more?
5. Visits with family and friends who I don’t see often enough.
There were also several non-holiday-esque things that made me happy during the post-Christmas week:
1. Take out from Orchid- Always a treat. This time I tried the chicken lo mein. Did not disappoint.
2. Rediscovering ice skating. Haven’t skated in years. A great time!
3. A sesame bagel from My Three Sons in GC. Surprisingly good.
4. Continuing the hunt for best local pizza at Mama Theresa’s in GC Park. Tasty but the search continues.
5. Realizing I can still do the hula hoop! Great exercise and so fun.

Something’s Baking

I love the smell of something baking in the oven. With Christmas now over, I realized that I’ve done more baking in these last few weeks than I probably have over the entire year. I somehow squeezed in the time for scratch baking cupcakes, cookies, cakes and brownies. The baking is still going on in my house during this post-Christmas week and will likely continue right up to New Years. Here are a few of my faves that filled my kitchen with fantastic aromas this holiday season:

chocolate chip pumpkin bread
almond biscotti
pumpkin cheesecake
chocolate cupcakes
almond crescents
hershey kiss blossoms
sugar cookies
chocolate biscotti
pumpkin cookies
chocolate chip cookies- everyone’s all time favorite!

Of course, attending a cookie exchange party helps to add to your variety of baked goods without adding to your time spent in the kitchen. I came home from that party with a ton of delicious home-baked sweets. A big “Thanks” to whoever came up with the fantastic idea of exchanging holiday cookies. I’ll bet it was a busy (and obviously very smart) woman!

What baked in your kitchen this holiday season?

Take Better Holiday Photos!

Photographer Kenny Lombardi is guest blogging today with some tips on how to take better photos- just in time for the holidays! I’m sure we could all stand to improve our pics a bit. Here’s some advice from a pro:

Looking for some tips to make your holiday photos a bit more interesting?  It might be easier than you think. Many people think that a camera is the most important factor in photography, but it’s not.  In fact the most influential piece of the photography puzzle usually sits behind the camera. That’s right …YOU!

Today’s technology has advanced to the point where even your phone can take a nice quality photo.  So most of you already have the equipment you need to produce a photo that everyone will love.  Here are 3 quick things for you to think about to add some spice to your photos.
Try following the “rule of thirds”. This basically means that you should move the subject of your photo off center. The subject should be placed in either the right or left third of the frame. This usually makes the photo more appealing to the eye.
Are you tired of taking photos that turn out blurry?  Make a conscious effort to be as still as possible when pressing the shutter button. We all know that, but sometimes that’s not enough. You also have to be aware of lighting. It is always desirable to take a photo with its natural surrounding light. However, there are times when the lighting is low. The slightest movement by you or your subject will result in a blurry photo. Activating the flash on your point and shoot or phone will help you take a nice crisp photo in low light situations. Try to start anticipating these situations before you take your shot. Thinking about this ahead of time will ensure that you don’t miss capturing that special moment.
Everyone knows that a clean lens will take the best photos. When is the last time you looked at your smart phone’s camera lens? We carry our phones in our pockets, bags and purses. We also pass our phones around to show family and friends our photos or something on Facebook. All this action attracts finger prints, dust and other things you do not want on your lens. Even if you don’t see smudges, they could be affecting your camera images. Clean the lens on your phone before you take your next shot.
The focus on these tips is to be a bit more conscious of small things that can help you increase your odds on taking that perfect shot.

Envie of Seventh

It is pretty difficult to walk by Envie, a boutique on Seventh Street, without stopping by to see what unique items are in…and not very difficult to end up leaving with a shopping bag. Envie is neatly laid out inside and the items are fabulous. One thing I loved is the numerous pieces that are, as I call it, made with a conscience … for instance We Dream in Color is one designer you’ll see whose jewelry is handcrafted in the US “in a socially conscious fashion with minimal environmental impact”. And the pieces are awesome.

You’ll also find an array of jewelry that has an edgy vibe to it: think metals and leather. You can definitely stop into Envie after your outfit is set and tie it all together with any of these pieces. These cuffs are gorgeous and are a sneaky way to tie in some subtle chic to any outfit.
Envie boasts some vibrant necklaces and bracelets as well. Get one (or two) of these into your repertoire for a classy update to any outfit. It’s pretty hard to choose a favorite.
Accessories are truly a great way to test out a bold color or style without fully committing to it. Plus, who doesn’t love a big beautiful necklace? Envie has a number that will make a statement. This beautiful piece is what outfits are made around:
Envie has tons of amazing necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and other great accessories that would make most anyone on your shopping list very happy. There are also some cute bags, hats and scarves too. Last but not least — I can’t forget to mention the Liquid Metal belts I spotted in a tucked-away basket. A must-have that would give any outfit just the right amount of swank.
All in all – Envie is a lovely store to stop into as you’re perusing the boutiques along Seventh Street. There are a variety of quality accessories that fit the bill if you’re looking for something a bit edgy or if you just want to spice up a more traditional outfit. A perfect mix! Envie’s owner, Christina, is super sweet and the staff is equally gracious and professional. Worth a trip if you don’t live in GC, even better if you do!

The Newcomer’s Cocktail

Since I never pledged a sorority in college, I finally got my opportunity to attend a sorority-like event. It was the Welcoming Club of Garden City’s Newcomer’s Cocktail at Tiffany’s in Manhasset- just the excuse my fellow suburbanites and I needed to “swank-it-up” a bit on a Thursday night.

The Welcoming Club certainly checked all the boxes on this night. They served delicious cocktails and appetizers. A good number of Tiffany’s employees were on-hand in case anyone got the urge to shop during the evening (and shop they did).

When we first entered we were given name tags- the GC newcomers wore tags with a crystal embedded in them to indicate that we were the newbies while pre-exisitng Club members wore tags sans crystal. Cute idea. This was not followed by initiation rituals but instead by flowing champagne. Also a nice idea. There were raffles for Tiffany’s gifts and a few speeches. Mostly, there was a lot of mingling and socializing, which I’m happily realizing are common themes in this town.

It was also an opportunity for the Newcomer’s Club to explain their intra-clubs to all of us newbies. In a nutshell, a club exists for almost anything you could want to do in a happenin’ suburb- gourmet cooking, progressive dinner, ladies night out, couples night out, playdates, book club, running, movies, tennis, bowling, golf, bunko, etc, etc. You get the point. If you want to get on the inside of GC, it seems like the Welcoming Club can get you on the fast track. This club may just be a newcomer’s dream. I think I’ll be pledging… oops… I mean joining.

Groupon: Buyer Beware

If you’re like me, you’re often tempted by deals on Groupon or Living Social b/c you think you’re going to save money. If you’re even more like me, you often don’t use the groupons you’ve purchased. But they always sound like a great deal, don’t they? Think again…

I purchased a Groupon for JC Penny store portraits- $25 for a photography session plus 3 digital images and two printed photos. Sounded great and much cheaper than using a private professional photographer. I’m not usually a fan of department store portraits and the typical holiday card- kids dressed in fancy clothes complete with red velvet, bows, ribbons, bells and reindeer sweaters, while sitting in front of a fake fireplace/reindeer/drunken Santa Claus…. But I decided to give it a try b/c $25 is an absolute bargain.

On the day of the appointment, we were running late and rushing. Have you ever tried getting four kids (5 years and under) dressed and together for an appointment? Well, it’s a little like herding cats. As a result of the rushing, my good stroller was hastily folded up and shoved into the trunk. Naturally, it broke. We forged on and arrived at the store 15 min late (of course we did. Who arrives on time with kids??). We were told that the store has a 10 min grace period. Obviously this rule was made by someone who doesn’t have kids (or never was a kid). Pepcid pills popped, we rescheduled for the following week.
When the big day arrived again, we were determined not to be late. With the kids partially dressed and somewhat happy (Goldfish work every time), I managed to back out of my driveway without noticing the car parked behind me and backed right into it. After talking to the neighbor and promising to take care of the damages (it was a small dent on the bumper. How bad could it be?), we still made it to the appointment on time.
But now we had to take the Goldfish away. That left one child crying just in time for the pictures. Perfect. It’s not a family portrait unless someone’s crying, right? When the session was over, the saleswoman gave me the ole’ bait and switch. I could take only 3 images as per my Groupon (and get that “you don’t care about your kids” look from the saleswoman) or I could buy the entire disc for a mere $85. Of course, I opted for the whole disc. Great groupon deal (not really).
The following day I received a phone call- the cost of repairing (which actually means replacing) the bumper is $775. Well, at least the Groupon was only $25. On second thought… stroller cost: $700, bumper repair: $775, photos $85, Groupon $25, massage I needed after the stress: $100. So, all in all, the holiday photos ended up coming in at a mere $1,685.00. What a bargain! I could have hired my own photographer, make up artist and drunken Santa and it would still have cost less.
So, next time you think you’re getting a good Groupon deal, think again. Hidden costs will likely be incurred. You know what they say… Buyer beware!

Hurricane Sandy Lessons

On the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, I am compelled to take a walk down memory lane and recap the lessons I learned after living through it and being displaced from my home for 5 months.

1. Don’t ignore your neighbors. Especially in urban settings, people tend to say hello to one another (sometimes) but don’t really become friendly. I learned that this was a mistake. When disaster struck, our Hoboken neighbors helped one another tremendously- sharing the news of what was happening by yelling it from house to house through open windows, lending lanterns and batteries, sharing food and water, charging flooded car batteries… the list goes on and on.

2. Don’t ignore your family- you might need to live in their house for five months one day (Thanks mom and dad)!

3. Appreciate what you have. Regardless of what you don’t like about your house or apartment, you will miss it dearly after you’ve spent five months living with family (see #2).

4. Write your address on your trash cans. They may end up floating many blocks away and someone just might return them to you.

5. Never underestimate a hot dog. The only thing better than eating a hot dog at a baseball game is eating a hot dog that your neighbor passed through your second floor bedroom window (from his adjacent balcony) after you’ve existed on only pretzels and granola bars for two days.

6. You will find that something good happens after something bad.

7. Weather forecasters can be accurate sometimes.

8. Keep your flood insurance up to date. Enough said.

9. Talk to strangers. Their kindness may surprise you. People we didn’t know at all, or just barely knew, helped in many ways.

10. Move to higher ground.

10 Things GC women will never say

1. I’m thinking of leaving my bunco group for one that actually plays bunco.
2. Does anyone know if Garden City has a lacrosse team?
3. I got all of my furniture at Bob’s.

4. I wish my kids were involved in more sports.

5. Let’s talk about St. Paul’s for a few more years.

6. Umberto’s?? Never heard of it.

7. I just bought a Louis Vuitton that no one else has.
8. I haven’t driven my car in a week. I walk everywhere.
9. I’ll just run out in my pajamas. No one will see me.

10. These landscapers, tree guys, gardeners, etc are such a hassle. I’m just going to mow my own lawn.
